Meet the nine new faces in Justin Trudeau's expanded cabinet
The group includes seven ministers who are rookies, and six of the new ministers are women.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 38-member cabinet announced on Tuesday includes a large class of new ministers, a sign the Liberals are looking to inject fresh blood into their government while attempting a careful balance of gender, race, and regional representation.

The group includes seven ministers who are rookies, and two others with previous federal and provincial cabinet roles. Four are from Ontario, three are from Atlantic Canada, and one each are from Quebec and Alberta. Six of the new ministers are women.

Here are the new faces in cabinet, and what their background suggests about why they got the gig.

Marci Ien – Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Youth

There are multiple reasons why the Liberals were likely keen to get Ien into a ministerial role. She holds the high-profile riding of Toronto Centre, replacing former finance minister Bill Morneau. She’s a former television personality for CTV’s The Social and Canada AM, giving her the communications skills and charisma that are a strong asset on the front benches. And she’s a Black Canadian of Trinidadian background, improving the cabinet’s ethnic diversity.
